Description
Former fort
Characteristics
Fort Kleiner Feldberg is located on 790 meters below the Grosse Feldberg Mountain and therefore the highest situated fort throughout the entire Limes in Germany. The fort ruin is enclosed by an apparent shoulder on 0,7 ha. The fort "small " Feldberg is considered one of the best preserved antique structures of the Upper Germanic Limes. On the occasion of the recognition of the Limes as world heritage in July 2005 it has been restored and enhanced with a park.
After the middle of the 2nd century the fort has been enforced with two groups of a hundred (Centurien). Between the fort and the Limes, which can still be identified within a 100 meters distance as a plane bank, lie the conserved foundation walls of the fort´s bath, traditionally referred to as "Heidenkirche". In addition, marks of a small village were found – it is probable that the soldiers´ families used to reside at this location.
Events
Occasionally guided tours on the circular route Feldbergkastell take place. The course of the route and a description can be found in the section: Experience (in vita videre).
